When writing a wedding speech, it is a great idea to personalize your speech with a joke or anecdote about the bride and groom. Personalizing your speech makes it memorable and special. However, if you cross the line of appropriateness with jokes and anecdotes, your speech can quickly go from great to ghastly. Follow these tips to personalize your wedding speech with appropriate jokes and anecdotes.
Relate it to the Bride and Groom
Make sure your joke or anecdote has a purpose. Do not tell a story about a great time you had with the groom in your best man speech, unless it has something to do with how he met his new wife or how you became close friends. Remember that your speech is meant to honor and toast the bride and groom. Appropriate stories about how the groom has grown to love the bride, how your relationship has grown with the groom/bride over the years, or how the groom/bride now seem complete are great topics for your wedding speech.
Maintain a Level of Appropriateness
Remember that the families of the bride and groom will hear your speech. If you are unsure if your joke or anecdote is appropriate, ask a close friend or family member to be the judge. If you are in doubt, do not include it. Stories about a drunk night out, the sex life of he bride and groom, and other questionable activities might get you in trouble.
Do Not Talk About Past Relationships
No matter how horrible or great the bride and groom’s exes were, this is not the time to talk about them. This day is a celebration of the love of the bride and groom. Past dating history is not relevant. Do not talk about how you thought the groom was going to marry his last girlfriend, or how glad you are that the bride did not marry her last jerk boyfriend.
