Mother of the Groom Toast – The Do's and Don'ts

Preparing the mother of the groom toast need not be a daunting task. With the help of the right resources, you should be able to put together a short yet impressive speech for the occasion.

In this article, let us consider the do’s and the don’ts of writing and giving the mother of the groom toast:

Do enjoy the moment. It is normal to feel a little nervous in front of a large crowd. Just think that the people in the audience are mostly family and friends. These are the people you know so there is really no reason to feel embarrassed. Breathe deeply before starting your speech and enjoy the moment.

Do include funny lines. A toast for a wedding does not have to be very formal. Adding a touch of humor will not only entertain the audience, it will make you feel more relaxed as well.

Don’t talk about past relationships. Yes, it is recommended to tell funny anecdotes about your son but make sure that you do not hurt anyone’s feelings, especially the bride or the groom. This is not the time to speak about ex-girlfriends or past relationships even if you meant to tell them as a joke. If you are going to share a story, be sensitive and be considerate.

Don’t go overtime. Some people are comfortable delivering a speech. If you feel the same way, great! However, you do not want to take away the time from other speakers. A three to five minute speech is just the right length. If you are going to tell a story, make it brief.

Don’t exaggerate. Although it is perfectly understandable to be emotional, remember that it is a joyful occasion. You do not want to spoil the mood of the party by crying exaggeratedly. Keep your composure and share good cheer.
